I see where you are going, but another factor is this--with the increased standards
does it make it harder for those that are behind because of poor situations in their past to be thrown into the tough situation of BYU academics.

I have some responsibility with regards to BYU applicants and many of those I work with to get in are Native American. Almost all that want to get do so-- there is a much higher likelihood for acceptance to BYU with their low test scores, etc than a white student from the same school and test scores.

However, because there are so many truly free programs out there for Natives, many choose to go other places and frankly, higher education is not always a priority. A Native sister that works in a neighboring stake for Deseret Industries and focuses on education placement actively works against BYU because she wants to get them to other places for free, and even paid for. She has also told me that any native American could get a PHD for free if they wanted with all the grants, programs and scholarships available.

BYU does accept many scholarships- but some are being steered away from there, but almost all that apply from our area go if they choose to. Many do not choose to because they are told by family to stay close by and the separation is stark
