yes, it's about opinions and you put forth a lot of them...
...my post was providing a counterpoint to the comment by the OP "We need a coach that can establish and define a culture. Bronco’s stern affect was an asset in this regard. You have to have a rock solid foundation to your program that you don’t deviate from during tough times"

While there's no doubt he started out running a taut ship and a disciplined program, he had moved away from that foundation at the end of his tenure (hence his team earning the rep of being a dirty team). It wasn't just that his teams were penalized a lot (there's a school of thought that aggressive defenses get more penalties called but then get away with even more penalties that aren't called and it gives them a competitive advantage on the field because refs will feel pressure NOT to call every act worth a penalty flag because it makes them look like they're determining the outcome of the game), they were, it's the dirty type of hits he was ignoring (targeting, attempting to hurt opposing players, nut-punching, twisting ankles in the pile after the tackle, sucker punches, brawls, etc) that have no place in BYU football.

It's pretty hypocritical to preach religious values on Friday night firesides and then go out the next day and go well past the line of physical play and go deep into the realm of dirty play. "We promote sportsmanship in our program, and clean play," Mendenhall said when asked if he would sanction one of his own players if they did what Bender did to Fuga. "... I am not going to make a decision for [Nevada] coach [Chris] Ault, nor really address what I would do other than re-emphasize sportsmanship."

I did a google search for "dirtiest team in college football" and #1 on the search list was an article titled "BYU: The Dirtiest Team In College Football".

As for fixing the talent problem left behind once the seniors from last year's team graduated you suggested "Go get JC guys or grad transfers" as if they can be purchased easily on Amazon.com. Every program in America is scouring the JC ranks for immediate impact players. More often than not the guys BYU get take a year or so to get up to D-1 speed and need time in the weight room to develop themselves for the increased physical play. Same with grad transfers. We got a really nice WR from UTEP a few years ago but he's the exception not the rule. As for Bronco's QB, they got that guy two years ago (not last spring) and it took him a year to get his game up to speed (he QB'd them in the 2-10 season and struggled). It's rare that a one year or two year player will come in and have an immediate impact and at BYU it's even rarer. They don't grow on trees. With as many holes as Bronco left in the depth chart there aren't that many impact players in the JC ranks or as grad transfers to plug all the holes.

As for the talent being good enough to win 8 games like Bronco did, guys with expert opinions have said repeatedly that Ty's play calling and scheme are fine, it's the players that aren't executing (Norm Chow and Trevor Matich both just said it in the past week). I think their opinion is a little more credible than yours.

We have some talented guys for sure sprinkled in but they're inexperienced and raw and making rookie mistakes. Some are finally showing signs of getting up to speed (Hifo and Simon are starting to look like playmakers, Squally finally seems to get the nuances of running between the tackles, Bushman has shown playmaking ability but he's also making a lot of rookie mistakes that lead to turnovers, etc).

Just like when Crowton took over for Lavell, he had some really nice seniors for one year and then the wheels fell off the talent wagon due to some poor recruiting in the past few years forcing Crowton to reload the talent pipeline over the next several years. By the time he got canned he had experienced sophomores and juniors with NFL talent primed and readied for the next coach to walk in and win right away. Once those guys left the system and Bronco only had his own recruits to work with, we saw BYU slide from 10-11 win seasons into the 7-8 win category which then degraded further into the reputation of being the dirtiest team in college football.

Not coincidentally, Kalani is finding himself in the same situation as Crowton. He had some nice seniors for one year and then a team lacking in talent and experience and it will take some time to reload the pipeline with talent. Unfortunately for Kalani he might end up being the guy who fills the pipeline but watches another coach, like bronco, walk in and enjoy all his hard work.

Meanwhile Bronco is enjoying a lot of talent left behind by his predecessor. His defense and offensive depth chart is loaded with talent including 4 and 5 star guys (some real studs) who were top 10-15 ranked players in the nation coming out of high school (Jake Fieler, Andrew Brown, Micah Kiser, Quin Blanding etc). Bronco's not recruiting that kind of talent and many of those guys will be gone after this season. We'll see how they carry on after this as he will have to rely more and more on his own recruiting.
