You cannot laud UC and Stanford for not discriminating who attends, since they

are public universities and it would be illegal. On the other hand BYU is willing to collaborate in ways with those with different beliefs, so long as it cannot be considered an acceptance of those beliefs. Looking at Caffeine, a silly example I know, BYU didn't even put caffeine on campus until after the church made a statement about caffeine being okay. If BYU steps beyond what the church doctrine allows in an issue, then it looks like the church is complicit in whatever that issue is. Many members will assume the church is okay with it. The church and BYU are very careful to make sure that none of their actions can be interpreted as acceptance of sin.
