First, you’re sort of proving my point. I didn’t say anything about fighting or causing problems. I just talked about disagreeing. Strongly disagreeing. You read that automatically and someone who fights and causes problems. And you say you don’t want them at BYU and hope the school wouldn’t accept them because you don’t want that atmosphere. That’s the whole argument!!! BYU is the kind of place where if you disagree with LDS dogma, you are rejected as some kind of heretic and people say that you shouldn’t be there. Open thought is not tolerated. Only a very narrow line of thinking is welcome.
Second, the scenario you’re using (and that I, admittedly, started with) that you claim is unlikely isn’t actually the scenario where this most likely arises. It’s likely not the 18 year old freshman who has a hard time. It’s the 21 year old senior who, upon getting a little older, starts to see the world differently and starts rejecting LDS ideas. That kid goes to her bishop and admits to these disbeliefs and, depending on the bishop, loses the EE. That kid isn’t at BYU to cause trouble. That kid is already three years deep into her education and wants to graduate. But if she’s honest about her beliefs (and really watch out if she’s honest enough to go and join another church), she gets booted. That’s intolerance of differing ideas in the purest form.
And lest you think that that scenario is implausible, I promise you it is not. It’s just that kids know they’ll get kicked out and so they keep their mouths shut until they graduate.
