And coach Drury was an assistant. Coach Drury was great, one of the greatest coaches in Utah HS history, but coach spencer might have been the greatest coach in Utah HS history. I was fortunate enough to be there for both of them. My sophomore year was cosch Spencer’s final year and it ended as a state championship, my Sr year was coach Drurys 2nd season as head coach and it ended with an undefeated 23-0 state championship, coach Drury’s first of many.
I agree with you thing about some of those Provo teams of coach Drury’s, they could have played with anyone, but maybe you didn’t know about some of coach Spencer’s teams. His early 70’s team that featured 7’2” Bret Vroman who played in the NBA, Gifford Neilsen who played in the nfl, and Vance Law who played mlb has a very strong argument for greatest HS team in Utah state history, better than the LP 3 teams. Also coach Spencer’s late 70’s teams that featured Devin Durrant was fantastic as well. And his early 80’s teams when I was there.
Those teams could have, and did, play with anyone. They were that good. Both coaches but out some incredible teams.
