One issue BYU faces when they have premier teams like Womens Soccer is how do we satisfy the church, the member and reality.
Not saying this is the case here but many members think because their kid is LDS they have an unwritten right to be on a BYU sports team. It gets worse the better the BYU team is because people have a higher desire to be on that team. Women's Soccer is a premier team. It also happens to be a premier female sport in general. Big pool, more fish. Small fish get pushed out in favor of the biggers ones. BYU wants to field the best possible team. Sometimes the best players are not LDS but want to play at BYU because it's a premier team. So now we not only push out a top tier LDS player but do it in favor of a non member. Feelings get hurt and you see the issue.
I can't we don't see this issue with womens softball or other less competitive teams.
We saw a similar situation with a XC kid here in Bama. 2nd bet runner in the state. Had a lot of interest in BYU and BYU showed interest in him. However other big schools came calling and started to offer scholarships. They put pressure on him and BYU was lacking response so he went somewhere else. He later found out BYU did have interest but was waiting on a couple other commits to see what they could offer him. In the end he'll run for someone else.
