BYU arrogantly thought that they could get an exceptional runner with very low effort, simply because of the LDS experience that their school offered (an experience that is completely unrelated to their track and XC programs). And in the long run, they were right. The LDS experience was enough to win them an exceptional runner.
I really wish the LDS experience was better across the country. I served a mission in the US, got an advanced degree in a major US city, and interned in another major US city. The singles wards in each area were a joke. If you're a Mormon kid and want an LDS social scene/dating opportunities, you're pretty much limited to BYU (and then as distant runners-up, USU, UofU, UVU, and BYU-I). Not good.
