So Frustrating! I had a similar experience with cross country/track
Several years ago I coached a young woman, not LDS, who was a high caliber cross country/track athlete. Multiple state championships, top programs expressing interest. I talked to the then head women's coach Patrick Shane, whom I knew personally, and told him that the young woman has tons of LDS friends, including my own kids, wouldn't have a problem with the honor code, and that if he contacted her as soon as he was allowed and pursued her hard we could probably get her to BYU. He seemed excited and promised to call her the very morning of the first day he was allowed to recruit her.
She never heard word one from Coach Shane or anyone else at BYU. She signed with a top 5 program, won multiple NCAA championships and was a US Olympian.
