Not unusual
My son had a similar experience. Had been to several BYU soccer camps--the men's coach said to stay in touch, etc. But then never replied to anything and of course was never recruiting him (he already "signed" or committed several players in that recruiting class--mostly local Utah county kids). He did show up to open tryouts after his mission and nearly made the team but eventually moved on with school.

My worst church/BYU employment interview experience happened with the MTC--they were interviewing for Korean MTC teachers and I went and did the interview process. After a few weeks of hearing nothing, they were posting positions for Korean MTC teachers again so I called to follow up and got what sounded like a flustered lady. I inquired about the position indicating I had interviewed but hadn't heard back so was following up and got a cold "if you didn't hear back then that might tell you how you did".

None is very professional but I wonder if it has to do with the church/BYU operating "on a budget" and not necessarily having sufficient staff or experienced staff to do things "professionally".
