and applied to mostly CA schools as a CA resident. I didn't get an interview anywhere. Dr. Bloxham recommended to me at that time I look outside of medicine. Sure I took an unconventional approach, I majored in English and took every pre-med science class I needed, and excelled at it.
Following year, I applied to U of U as a Utah resident, got a job at Alta View Hospital, studied hard and broadened my applications. I received interviews to multiple schools including U of U. On interview day, I was told if I was sitting there, then academically I have achieved everything I needed to attend. It was all up to my interview. That day, my interviews went pretty straightforward. No curve balls that I could tell. In the end, I was wait listed. Other schools told me I wouldn't make it in medical school as I didn't take Biochemistry in undergrad.
Fastforward... I matriculated to a solid medical school in Missouri, graduated in the top 10 of my class and received my top choice to train at the renowned Cleveland Clinic, in Ohio. Oh, and received a 96% in Biochemistry in medical school having never taken it at BYU. As far as I could tell the U of U discriminated against me as I was a typical, White, BYU, return missionary with nothing to differentiate me from the next mormon BYU grad.
My personal feeling? Being a white male with solid credentials was a negative for me. Say what you want, but I saw many others with worse credentials get accepted to MANY schools.
