I gave an example where I, as a white male, had a bit of a unique and diverse background and list of experiences that might have differentiated me from other candidates.
Picky schools can create a minimum standard, and then select candidates above that standard based upon lots of different factors that go far beyond gender or race. Most places don’t simply pick the people that scored the best on test scores.
NFL teams will have standards for players that they select based upon height, weight, wingspan, 40 time, etc. But they ultimately interview people, look at their game film, consider their background and families, and take lots of factors into consideration before deciding who they are going to pick.
This is a very strange conversation to me. This seems like a very basic thing that I’m describing. I’m not aware of any company that will simply pick people based upon how they tested without considering other factors. Lots of things contribute to diversity. It doesn’t have to be a bad word that people are afraid of.
