In fact, between 1997 and 2004 (just before Holmoe became AD) BYU won 7 national championships. Since then, zero.
Also, BYU is immune to most of those issues especially in sports where we won national championships. The conditions for success still exist for sports like men’s volleyball, cross country, track and field. We have produced Olympians in all of those sports (I’m counting track and cross country as basically the same thing) as recently as the last Olympics. They aren’t chumps either. Oh, and some of the best athletes we’ve had in these sports were not members of the Church.
BYU has a religious and international outreach unlike any school in the country. We can get athletes from places even other big money schools cannot, and from countries others cannot. While schools in smaller conferences have suffered due to big money, BYU is in a situation where it shouldn’t.
