"He didn't change. What did then?" Everything changed since then. Right after
Jimmermania and the Sweet Sixteen run, BYU decides to play hardball with the Big 12 and stay Indy. Next thing you know, the whole landscape of CFB changes. BCS turns to P5 and playoff. BYU get the same money as Army from the playoff which is almost nothing. Everyone is now on major TV. When BYU declared Indy in 2010 I don't even think the Pac-12 was on ESPN. Timing was horrendous, but many of us knew (even at the time) you could never do what BYU did. It was completely idiotic what happened in 2011 with the Big 12.

Now, consider the trajectory of BYU football and basketball since Jimmermania. It has sucked. BYU loses to USU, Utah, and Boise regularly (in football). BYU's bowl games are terrible. We've lost to teams like UMass and NIU at home. We lost nine games in one season. Our Heisman trophy winner was hired (many claim it was Holmoe's doing) to jump from HS football to lead an FBS offense and of course it was a disaster. Our former coach said Indy would not be sustainable . . . then bolts for more money in the ACC and now he took a bottom-feeder to division favorites. We haven't beaten Utah in a freaking decade (in football)! We haven't sniffed a WCC title in men's hoops. BYU gets in trouble with the NCAA and has to vacate basketball wins. Basketball is coming off of one of it's worst seasons in a long time. Fans continue to complain about late home kickoffs. Attendance is down. Our rivals are selling out every game.

Apparently that is OK with many of you.
