It’s possible to still navigate a decent rec sports experience up to 12 or 13 IF

you live in a good town with dedicated volunteers running the youth leagues. And you get on a team/coach who gives a crap. Your kid will never make a high school team but they can still play up until then and get a lot out of it. But it’s not available everywhere.
