I agree, there are a ton of options. I think "specialization" is killing certain sports in local markets, it depends...
...town by town.
I live in the northeast. Lax and football dominate the town. Other sports suffer as lax is a year round event. Basketball stinks and if your kid is good you don't go to the HS you go to a prep school. All the good athletes specialize in other sports, for example, lax is year round. Football is evolving more and more to year round, but kids tend to be lax or football.
I am sure other towns are heavy basketball and lax stinks, or baseball...etc. All depends.
