Basketball, its kind of the same way. The really athletic or wealth families stick their kids on the club teams. 15 years ago, we were challenging for state titles, now they are getting thrashed handily. club only isn't working. To many sub par kids whose parents have the wealth to push their kids into travel.

Girls volleyball is thriving with the clubs, partially because there is no non club leagues.
