It's the entitlement...

As an LDS Ute fan, I still like to see the Y play well. I'd love to see them in the BCS.

Admittedly what makes it hard sometimes is the arrogance of the program and the fans. It's like b/c of the Y's success 20 years ago, they are somehow entitled to success before earning it on the field. That's what made Lavell's team so great and so fun to watch. They had a chip on their shoulder and had something to prove.

2008 was the biggest joke. BYU had a great team. Tons of potential. Yet they were so full of themselves and over-confident. Hardly LDS values. Quest for Perfection T-shirts? NC talk in September? It seemed like BYU thought they were so invincible that they didn't have to game plan against the likes of TCU or Utah - that if they just played "their" game and execute they would be entitled to victory.

Remember Max Hall's quote after the TCU game? "We're not as good as we thought we were."

It's hard to cheer for a team, based solely on religion, who adheres to that mindset. Deserving without earning.

Compare to Utah 2008. Blue-collar, unheralded team of two-star overachievers who turned the BCS system on its head. To me, that's much more admirable. Utah blew out Alabama and yet all Y fans can do is talk about how Utah barely beat New Mexico. As if somehow that was more embarrassing than getting blown away by an Arizona team UNM beat.

Even 2009. BYU plays brilliantly. Game plans well and beats OU. Immediately, all the focus was on whining about the NC game and the injustice of the BCS rather than how to stop the speedy FSU offense. And it showed when the two teams met in Provo.

Now 2010. Despite credible evidence to the contrary, any mention of Utah to the Pac-10 was the laughing stock on this board. Remember June 11th? Suddenly Utah goes to the Pac-10 and all the talk is whining about religion and bigotry when in reality BYU had done nothing on the field in over a decade to distinguish themselves as more deserving.

Sure, there were off the field reasons why Utah was selected. But it's so much healthier to focus on what the Y needs to do to get better as a program than to cry injustice and belittle a very deserving Utah program.
