RE: From a USU fan

I agree with your main points. We could go back and forth about Aggie basketball but I don't really care to. But I think a lot of BYU fans don't get the waste of tithing chant. I'm pretty sure most LDS Aggie fans know BYU athletics isn't funded by tithing. The chant isn't saying we don't agree with the way apostles use tithing, when BYU is losing it's just taunting the BYU players implying their team isn't good enough to justify tithing dollars. It's not in defiance of the church, it's just making fun of the players of the opposing team and the chant works because BYU is a church school. A chant during a basketball game isn't meant to be a serious argument against the way the church uses its tithing money. If it was a chant about church doctrine or fans were doing something with garments or doing the missionary thing some schools do it would be a different story.

But yeah, any LDS person who does say tithing shouldn't be used for BYU as an academic institution is basically in disagreement with the brethren. I support BYU as an academic institution but don't support the attitude of many students and fans, just like you do with USU. BYU athletics is not supported by church dollars. There is a reason for that directly related to the question posed by the original poster. In reference to the original post, the two of us seem to agree.
