Some people spoil it for everyone else and thats the way it works. A certain handful of BYU students fit a stereotype or act a certain way or say certain things and people think that everyone that goes to BYU must be just like that. And that doesn't happen with too many major universities that I know of. With that many people at a school you think people would assume that there is diversity of thought and opinion...but people don't think that and they hate BYU.
I got it most from UVU students and Utah State students. They tried so hard make it seem like their schools were so much better because this or that. Or that BYU sucks because of this. Or I heard of that. Some of its jealousy. Some of its insecurity. Some of it is right. But I've always made a point of hitting back when people start going off on BYU. I usually say some variation of...Not everybody at BYU is like that....hey i have met mostly really cool people there...or the rules actually make it nice because you don't have to deal with some of the same issues that are everywhere at some campuses.
People think BYU is such a cage and that the people that go there are so hard done by, or they all turn out a certain way. Like RM syndrome when some missionaries return kind of weird for a while...all byu students are stuck in this bubble. Look you don't have to come to BYU. Leave it alone. And the rules are pretty much agreed upon by the Brethren...so I think its right to say that you have to be somewhat careful when you hate on byu. Its ok to root against or if you absolutely have to- hate the team....but don't hate (like max hall) everything about the university and what it stands for.
