If you heard of this no criticism ethos held at another college, say Bob Jones or Oral Roberts, or in another religion, what would you think of the group? I avoid using Islam or Scientologists as examples because there is a history of persecuting dissenters beyond mere criticism, but the point roughly works.
Church error--let's admit that there is this at least from time to time--should be open to fair recognition and discussion by its membership. It goes without saying that dislike of BYU, with its rules that treat adults like children, its expel dissenters and to remove LDS faculty with challenging views, should be inconsequential to religious affiliation. This intolerance is more indicative of totalitarian thinking than the kind of liberalism (in the historical sense) brought about by the Enlightenment. The liberalism that created an environment the Church teaches was necessary for the Restoration. Whose failure in the 19th century resulted in a rocky period for our ancestors. And you wonder why some Mormons can't accept what BYU stands for today.
For the record, I am Mormon. Can Cougarboard tolerate this post? My stopwatch is running...
