From a USU fan

I'm just going to be completely honest here. There are people who hate BYU sports for different reasons, but the vast majority don't like BYU sports because of its (not all) fans that are condescending and think BYU football is better than it is, or that think LDS people should cheer for BYU or they're not faithful, who claim that BYU's football team is the church's football team, as if its players were called to be BYU football players and that BYU football is serving a major purpose for the church. It's the fans that compare BYU sports to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir or LDS Social Services and then turn around and laugh about and defend things like Max Hall yelling curse words at the Ute after his touchdown. For the record, I think BYU sports is good in that it provides kids a chance to compete with people with similar beliefs and to have an opportunity to receive a good education. From time to time BYU football players or the program may make a good impression on someone not of our faith, but sports is naturally competitive and I guarantee it doesn't happen often. I don't fault the church for having a sports program through BYU and I think it's good for the people who are directly involved in it, but if it was more important than that and served a greater purpose for our church than that, then prophets and apostles would sing BYU sports' praises in General Conference, saying how members need to support BYU sports, and support of BYU would be part of the temple recommend interview.

Similarly, most people are not fans of the school because of people saying things like, "Everyone I know who went to USU or U of U went there because they couldn't get into BYU" and claim things like BYU being the Harvard of the west, or that if someone is a faithful member and they qualify they would be going to BYU. Guess what? I grew up in Logan, went on a mission, have always been active, had the grades, and never once considered BYU. It never even crossed my mind. It might be surprising to some BYU supporters, but other schools have things to offer students that BYU doesn't. U of U and USU both have programs that are better than the respective programs at BYU. Many LDS kids who grew up in the state don't need, or have a desire to go to a school with a culture like BYU's. It's a great place for some people, such as the kid who was the only LDS student in his high school, but a place like U of U or USU is a great place for someone who is interested in one of their strong programs or who grew up in a strong LDS culture and can benefit from some diversity, all while still having a strong LDS influence around him or her. BYU as a school serves a noble purpose. Those who misunderstand BYU's purpose or make it out to be greater than it is undermine that purpose.

So in summary, I, and many people, have no problem with BYU and its sports program in and of themselves. It's the BYU fans have condescending attitudes that reflect the church and its purpose poorly that bug a lot of us about BYU, and to be honest, that attitude probably bugs those in charge of BYU too.
