So if it did say "Quest for Perfection"

which comes from the school's mission statement, what's wrong with that? It's designed to be a religious statement as much as a sports one. BYU is a religious institution.

Look at the word "quest." It's a journey. It didn't say: BYU--Already Perfect--Eat that.

In fact, in football, Utah were the ones who actually achieved the "quest" is 2008. Certainly in obedience terms, I'm sure that lots of BYU players who screwed up. So because they failed to make it they should never make the goal? That's the part I don't really get.

I'm generally trying to be a better person, and I fall short sometimes(most of the time). I guess that makes me a self-righteous hypocrite just like Austin Collie or Max Hall. They set a goal and made it a slogan. I wouldn't have a problem with a Texas team that went 10-3 the previous year using the slogan "quest for perfection" and trying to take care of those pesky losses the next year. When they lost, OU might make fun of their slogan (especially if OU won more games that year) but that would be it.

In the end, I think this is a tempest in a teapot. It's really only AL...Fs who get bent out of shape about "quest for perfection." I don't think things like this affect BYU's image to those on the outside.

As far as entitlement, I don't get your point there, either. It's hard when you're a non-AQ team that doesn't get a lot of media love, and suddenly they think you're pretty great and maybe even on target for greatness. I can see how that was distracting to players, but I don't see how that equates with entitlement. Utah did come in with a chip on their shoulder and did prove they were the better team. Good for them. I don't see how choking against TCU shows that BYU was entitled, though. It shows that they weren't as good as TCU that year which most of us already agree with.

I guess by entitlement, you mean a few of your friends in Cali or a few people on internet boards started talking about "busting the BCS" or NC and were talking about how BYU just might do it. Some probably even overstated the likelihood that BYU would roll over their upcoming opponents. So that's where you get entitled?

Again. This is a tempest in a teapot. I don't believe either argument is a winning one. You can root for or against whatever team you want. You should also be able to hope for success, set lofty goals, and dream big without being accused of being self-righteous entitled brats.
