It really depends on the employee. I try not to burn bridges unless the employee
Truly will be a detriment to the team. Usually people leaving have good reasons and so I take the perspective of what would I do if I were n their shoes. I also ask employees if leaving to give me as much notice as possible so we can find replacements. Usually people still give two week notices but I’ve had people give a month. Most people that leave, we are either unable to match an offers or they are going into other fields or something different.

But I never know when we might need them again or when they will be in a position to help me further down the road.

Most people respond well to kindness. If someone tells me they’ve found a promotion or whatever, I try to act excited even if it is going to stress me out.

I’ve called on some of them to help
bail me out when I really needed an extra hand and they have helped.

Sometime doing the opposite of what we want to do is the better move. Try to remove emotion from it.

If you really wanted her to stay two weeks, why did you want her gone that day? It seems more logical that you would still need her for that week.

Also people may have friends/family looking for work they can refer.

But if she was a bad employee, by all means fire her.
